Outdoor Tourism
Ecotourism - green tourism: the most special form of rural tourism, which is connected to various forms of tourist activity in nature and develops in areas of ecological interest, recognized ecological value, such as National Parks, Ramsar wetlands, Natura 2000 network areas and other protected regions. It includes sightseeing, hiking, observing and photographing the ecosystems and other recreational activities organized in the natural environment, containing the element of adventure, not disturbing the environmental balance of the area and having a scientific and educational character.
Tour routes - hiking: the most specialized form of rural tourism that develops on mountain-hiking trails, and specifically routes on narrow non-motorized roads, where motorized means of travel are prohibited, and which are intended for the passage of mainly pedestrians and animals, with a smaller and fluctuating width from the carriageway, possibly significant fluctuations in its slope, as well as steps, for activities such as hiking, mountain climbing, pedestrian access to natural environments, sights (natural or cultural) and in general for the acquaintance and contact of man with the nature, history and culture of each place, as well as to serve communication and facilitate access to mountainous forest areas or points, traditional settlements as well as difficult, inaccessible low-altitude areas. It includes the set of activities to approach points in the countryside with the aim of getting to know the natural and cultural heritage of each place, the promotion of its special characteristics and the awareness of citizens for its protection.
Geotourism: A form of sustainable rural tourism, which is based on the geological and geomorphological characterization of the geosites of tourist destinations and the geoconservation and interpretation of the abiotic environment and is motivated by the experience, knowledge and enjoyment of geodiversity and geoheritage which are located, indicatively , in places of geological interest with geomorphological monuments and formations, petrified forests, active volcanoes, caves and canyons, geological faults and geoparks. It includes gentle activities of sightseeing and enjoying the scenery, as well as activities of a scientific and educational nature. It promotes environmental education and the management of the natural environment in a sustainable manner.
Fishing tourism: the form of rural tourism, which consists in the provision of services related to fishing, sponge fishing, aquaculture and related practices and techniques to visitors - tourists, who combine their holidays with those provided in the wet element fishing activities, with the aim of entertaining through fishing, gaining experiential experiences, getting to know local traditions, local customs and local gastronomy, spreading fishing culture, and economic stimulation of the social fabric at the local level.
Sports Tourism: The form of tourism, which takes place through active or passive participation in recreational sports activities that visitors - tourists choose in their holiday tourist destination, with the aim of entertainment and improving their health, fitness and well-being. Includes:active recreational sports activity, individually or in a group,
personal development or skill improvement and learning the rules for carrying out leisure activities individually or in a group
visiting locations and places related to the history, cultural heritage and culture of the sport or a sports legend;
leisure activities for people with special needs and disabilities.
Outdoor sports leisure-adventure tourism: the most specialized form of sports tourism which is aimed at visitors - tourists, who visit a destination as part of their holidays to actively participate in one or more extreme or mild adventure activities, which takes place once or occasionally non-competitive and has the main purpose of recreation and entertainment of the participants (sports and leisure activities). Eligible activities are developed: in the sea, in lakes and rivers, in mountainous, semi-mountainous areas and in urban and semi-urban areas and include:
programs of outdoor activities, which are distinguished between mild, such as hiking, horseback riding, running, archery, swimming with equipment, games of familiarity and trust (team building), and intense activities, such as descent with an inflatable boat (rafting), mountain biking, climbing (climbing), rowing, wave racing, kiteboarding, paintballing, engaging in all sports and leisure activities carried out during the winter season, and under specific climatic conditions, including those carried out in mountain refuges and ski resorts (snowboarding, sledding, abseiling - descent), caving, canyon crossing, triathlon, tennis, golf, sand volleyball and scuba diving, as well as extreme sports such as skydiving, cliff diving ) and controlled fall with an elastic rope (bungee jumping) hang glider or paragliding-parapente, sports recreation programs by teams of animators and coaches/trainers of the hotels with special infrastructure such as gyms, wellness centers (spa), swimming pools, golf courses, tennis courts, theme parks and thalassotherapy centers.
Bicycle tourism: the form of tourism where cycling is the main purpose of the trip and the bicycle is the means for visitors-tourists to experience a complete tourist experience. It refers to visitors - tourists who either stay in a specific tourist destination and choose daily cycling routes or visit several destinations and stay in different locations. Recreational cycling activities are divided into gentle cycling, where the cyclist enjoys nature and scenery, and intensive cycling, where fitness is the main goal.
Air tourism: Includes: the tour of visitors - tourists with privately owned (by the Organizer) or leased (by the Organizer) flying means of all types, categories and types, such as airplanes, ultralight flying machines (ULM) controlled by aerodynamic means or shifting the center of gravity with wheels, floats or amphibious, helicopter, parachute or paraglider with or without motor, glider, hang glider (individual gliding), gyroplane, hang glider and hot air balloon, using special equipment and accompanied by experienced and trained pilots, in accordance with specialized safety standards and national and international regulatory framework and procedures of the competent bodies. The air tour with the participation of visitors - tourists in an air tour over interesting tourist destinations of natural beauty and historical interest, with aircraft owned or leased (by the Organizer). Visitors - tourists, in parallel with their flying activity, can, depending on the Organizer's program, visit archaeological sites, historical tourist destinations, traditional wineries, olive mills, as well as workshops for the preparation of local products, in order to taste the local cuisine and get to know the natural and cultural environment.
Marine tourism: The set of organized tourist services and leisure and entertainment activities provided in the marine area and the shores of the tourist destination.
Cruise tourism: recreational sea travel with a scheduled route and port stops carried out by cruise ships, in which visitors - tourists visit in one trip many different destinations of touristic, cultural and historical interest and have the possibility to additionally choose offered excursion packages and authentic experiences in the destination itself to discover the special cultural heritage, attractions, historical sites, local customs and traditions, as well as having authentic experiences linked to gastronomy, entertainment, local markets, entertainment and modern culture.
Yachting tourism: recreational sea tour using owned (by the Organiser) or leased (by the Organiser) ships, sailboats, yachts or speedboats, crewed or uncrewed, a tour which includes accommodation and catering services and which visitors - tourists have the possibility to plan and choose their own route with special features, such as privacy, and the approach to beaches that are remote or accessible only by sea, to approach anchorages, tourist shelters and marinas in order to get to know the destinations they desire, shape their own schedule, visit the sights, try local flavors and products, have fun and be entertained.
Marine and coastal leisure activities: activities carried out in the marine area and described as "beach tourism" include in particular swimming, individual and group water games, water skiing, windsurfing, parasailing and coastal water excursions, or carried out in the coastal area and include especially beach volleyball, rackets, beach tennis, beach soccer and sunbathing.
Recreational diving tourism: Special form of tourism, which includes an underwater tour of any water area of the Greek territory including the sea, inland waters (lakes, rivers, caves), protected underwater areas, diving parks and visitable marine, inland river or lake archaeological sites or historical sites, shipwrecks either older or younger than 50 years since their sinking and free man-made underwater attractions. The water areas are chosen by the visitors-tourists, who combine their holidays with individual or organized diving with specific equipment and techniques, as well as with learning or guiding diving or with surface touring with a mask and snorkel (snorkelling) in order to exploration of the underwater seabed and underwater geomorphology for recreation, exercise and the acquisition of knowledge and experience.
Organized diving is the service of transport, underwater escort, surveillance and support, in case of emergency, offered by a Recreational Diving Service Provider to scuba divers, who have qualifications and experience at a level commensurate with the diving activity.
Guided diving is the organized diving in which the divers are accompanied by the Provider of Recreational Diving Services or in addition to it, as long as they have the qualifications provided by the E.P.K.A. as the case may be.
Snorkeling is the transportation, escort, surveillance and support service in the event of an emergency, relating to a swimming activity with the use of a mask, snorkel and flip-flops, during which the participants remain on the surface of the sea or carry out occasional breath-only dives. During it, participants may also use buoyancy devices or equipment to support themselves on the surface, depending on the conditions and their abilities. This service is offered by a recreational diving service provider, in accordance with the certified training program of the organization by which it is authorized.
The Diving Service Providers are legally licensed by the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy (YMNAP) entities (natural or legal persons) that operate as Diving Centers or Underwater Swimming Learning Schools, that provide scuba diving training services according to the certified training program of the Organization from which has been authorized, organized - guided diving, diving equipment rental. snorkeling, and/or snorkeling equipment rental.
Diving parks are legally designated marine areas together with the seabed, in which guided recreational diving is carried out exclusively within the meaning of letter b` of paragraph 2 of article 6 of this law, as well as related underwater activities with those according to article 1 of the present medium, such as underwater photography, underwater filming and environmental education.
Cultural tourism: Special form of tourism in which visitors - tourists discover, know and experience the history, tradition, cultural heritage, modern culture, as well as the culture and identity of the country and its people, through cultural leisure activities. The activities concern: cultural visits and tours to get to know the tangible and intangible cultural heritage, in world cultural heritage sites, archaeological sites, museums, buildings and architectural heritage monuments, national and historical monuments, historic city centers, traditional settlements, libraries and any place of culture and actions related to mythology, philosophy, literature, music, song, theater, cinema, photography and any art, as well as revivals and digital representations of historical, mythological and other cultural scenarios, cultural thematic routes: the set of natural or man-made attractions based on a specific thematic context, historical, cultural and experiential, which provide education and recreation; cultural events and festivals: any organized leisure activity of visitors - tourists to obtain a personalized and authentic experience, with any kind of active participation or engagement with the particular characteristics of a place.
More specific forms of cultural tourism: cultural urban tourism - city tourism, youth tourism, senior tourism, wedding tourism and tourism of film and television productions.
Gastronomy Tourism: You can plan your trip with the aim of tasting the authentic local cuisine or combine your stay with leisure activities related to gastronomy, while delving into the destination's history and traditions, lifestyle, culture, local tradition and national identity of the products. It includes activities such as: study and tasting of local products,
learning the local cuisine, purchase of agricultural products directly from the place of production,
participation in events - festivals and tasting presentations of quality food products,
highlighting Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, as well as
internationalization of local products.
Businesses that are active in the catering sector and enhance the quality and upgrade their services may receive, upon request, the Greek Cuisine Label from the Ministry of Tourism, in accordance with the provisions of T. 4333/2001 decision of the Minister Development (B 1097).
